Crikey! Isn’t the world a funny place? Only yesterday, the Daily Mail announces a campaign to banish plastic carrier bags (note - banish, not ban) - and today Marks and Spencer announce that they will from henceforth be charging 5p per bag to customers. Not only that, Marks and Spencer were namechecked twice in the Mail’s article. What a remarkable coincidence!
On one level, this can only be a good thing - two important British institutions siding very much with the angels on a campaign which represents an “easy win” for the environment. But having seen it all unfold, I can’t help feeling slightly icky at the rabbit out of a hat that the Mail pulled yesterday in the form of a “campaign launch”, and at the “posh-wash” which they’re obviously trying to gain by this covert association with M&S (a link-up which was equally obviously negotiated beforehand). Why not just announce it together?
