Despite a tumultuous couple of weeks and a biblical hiding in various elections, it looks like Gordon Brown is keeping his job as PM. Which might just make sense; Labour strategists probably figure that they’re facked in the next election whatever happens; better to let Gordo take the rap and then start with a clean slate, meanwhile allowing the Tories to become fully embroiled in the consequences of the financial meltdown during the next term of office.

Nonetheless, I haven’t had a poll for a while, so let’s indulge in some not-particularly-fevered and now-irrelevant speculation as to who the God-fearing, upstanding people of this noble land might want as PM instead of our current unelected jaw-dropping Youtube-gurning charisma-vacuum.

Choices in the usual location to your right (and, in Nick Griffin’s case, to nearly everybody’s right); feel free to nominate your own…

Have you got any policies, Duncan?

On a related, but unrelated side note - does anyone have any thoughts / views on Libertas: http://www.libertas.eu/uk/

Why would he need policies? Cameron’s going to get elected without having a single one, so why break the mould?

As for Libertas, any party that regularly uses Twitter is not a party I’d care to vote for.

Libertas is an interesting one in my opinion - they often seem to be described as anti-Europe and frequently in the same sentence as UKIP and BNP. Equally, whenever I’ve asked what people have thought I’ve often got flippant responses (like LZ’s). This observation isn’t at all intended as a criticism of the extremely thoughtful and erudite LZ (or any of the others - who vary in thoughtfulness and erudition) - it’s far more a reflection of the fact that Libertas don’t seem to have really made anything of themselves.

They claim to be the “first and only pan-European party” and state on their site that:

We are dedicated solely to reforming the EU; we want to stop the waste, end the corruption and put democracy at the heart of Europe.

… so they seem to be single issue, but decidedly not anti-Europe. In many respects, on the basis of what I know at the moment - which is decidedly little (and I’m open to be educated further!) - it almost seems a shame that they weren’t able to make more ground in the election.

TM - firstly, I’d like to apologise profusely for the flippant responses you may have had from other regular contributors; it’s fairly typical of the Tory attitude to Europe, I’m afraid.

As for Libertarse, “weren’t able to make more ground in the election” appears to be a massive understatement: check dis…

Hmmm … on the basis of that, perhaps it’s as well that they didn’t make much ground, since some of Libertas sounds decidedly shady.

What is a shame is that there isn’t a party that is prepared to be honest about some of the issues within the EU, but with the intention of addressing these while embracing a cohesive Europe - ostensibly what Libertas seemed to stand for. As someone who is prone to being skeptical of some elements of the EU, such a pro-Europe party would be very likely to get my vote.

I agree, TM - and I think that, were you to poll the British public*, they probably would too. Even though the current EU set-up is practically bankrupt in terms of the good will of its citizens, the idea of an integrated Europe remains a great one. Ditch the multi-million pound white-elephant buildings, the petty compliance-tastic legislation and the salary / bureaucracy wasteage (or at least change the public’s perceptions of the existence of those problems), and it’s still a runner.

(* - i.e. poll them with intelligent non-leading questions. Not like the one which I saw recently in The Sun, which went something along the lines of “Are you a big fan of Hitler, Napoleon and the Spanish Armada and probably a paedophile as well, or do you think we should have a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty?”)

Speaking of polling people with non-leading questions, it looks like you’re The People’s choice for Prime Minister, having garnered an astonishing - landslide even - 56% of the vote (14 votes … but then voter turn out has been falling in recent years).

With more votes than any of the others put together - including Nick Griffin, who did get one vote (disturbingly!!) - and in an election that has been as transparent and fair as recent ones in Iran you should be able to govern with an iron fist … errr … very much like they are in Iran.

It’s probably also worth observing that the poll is still open, so the result could still change … Duncan, for example, could garner a few votes by perhaps mentioning at least one policy. Or he could just do it dictator style by voting for himself, clearing his cookies and cache … and then voting for himself again.

Polls on VP are of course legally binding, so we can all look forward to Taf moving into No. 10 in the next week or so.
